The species and size composition of euphausiids consumed by Pacific hake ( Merluccius productus ) along the south-west coast of Vancouver Island were monitored during the 1989, 1990 and 1995–97 summer feeding seasons. Thysanoessa spinifera and Euphausia pacifica were the only euphausiid species eaten by hake. Hake persisted in selecting krill longer than 17 mm and consistently preferred T. spinifera, even though there was a substantial reduction in euphausiid abundance, a change in species composition and a shift in the size distribution to smaller individuals after the 1992–93 warm water years. The biomass of euphausiids available to hake after 1993 averaged 27% of that for 1991, the pre-ENSO year, and was 12% of the 1991 value in 1996. Hake predation was not responsible for the reduction in euphausiid abundance, as it was already low at euphausiid sizes smaller than those eaten by hake. 相似文献

The growth, food utilization and amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus lost into the water by rainbow trout (initial size 485 g) fed on low-fat Baltic herring and supplemented with a low-protein dry diet fed separately were studied in an 18-week net cage trial. Similarly to balancing protein and nonprotein energy in full diets, giving nonprotein energy in different feeds several hours apart improved the protein retention of low-fat herring to a level comparable to a commercially available dry diet control. The amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus lost into the water were also reduced to the same extent. The losses from the plain herring-feeding were twice as high. The improved protein retention and reduced nutrient losses were accompanied by 15–25% reductions in growth of the fish compared with the control dry diet. Sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax fillet quality was investigated after feeding with four diets (A, B, C or D) containing different levels of dietary vitamin E (139 mg kg–1 , 254 mg kg–1 , 493 mg kg–1 and 942 mg kg–1 , respectively). Six-hundred and eighty fish (mean initial weight 208 g) were equally divided into four 20 m3 tanks and fed for 87 days. Filtered seawater with a temperature ranging from 18.2 to 26.3 °C was supplied continuously. At the end of the experiment, fish were stored at 1 °C for 12 days. At one, three, six, nine and 12 days, 20 fish per group were processed for proximate composition, vitamin E and induced thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs) analyses. No significant differences in proximate composition were registered between groups. The flesh lipid content ranged from 88.0 g kg–1 (group B) to 96.8 g kg–1 (group A). Vitamin E fillet content was significantly different between groups, reaching levels of 98.0, 150.7, 225.2 and 302.0 μg g–1 lipids for group A, B, C and D, respectively. Induced TBARs values were statistically different only for group A compared with the other groups. No significant variations were registered in relation to preservation time. Because of the positive influence of vitamin E on seafood quality and the correlation between its dietary level and flesh deposition, the α-tocopherol content of the diet should be well above fish minimum requirements. 相似文献

Fish are able to select a balanced diet according to their nutritional needs by choosing among incomplete feeds or even pure macronutrients. However, the relevance of both the organoleptic properties of diet and the postingestive signals that they produce remains unclear. Thus, sharpsnout seabream were allowed to select between diets containing different edible oils with their organoleptic properties masked by using gelatine capsules. Fish were fed capsules of two different colours so that they could associate the capsule colour with its corresponding postingestive effect. The longitudinal experiment included a first phase during which the fish were adapted to consuming the gelatine capsules. In a second phase, the fish were challenged with two different encapsulated diets: one comprising a complete diet containing fish oil and the other a fat‐free diet. Sharpsnout seabream showed a preference for the fish oil capsules (3.8 ± 1.1 g kg?1 body weight (BW), 66.8% of total intake) over the fat‐free capsules, showing that they were able to associate the colour of the capsule with their nutritional content through postingestive signals. After that, the fish were challenged to select between the capsules containing the fish oil diet and capsules containing a vegetable oil (linseed or soybean), in which case they showed no preference between diets (2.4 ± 0.3: 2.1 ± 0.5 g kg?1 BW of fish oil versus linseed oil capsules and 2.2 ± 0.2: 1.8 ± 0.6 g kg?1 BW of fish oil versus soybean oil capsules), indicating that the fatty acid composition of the different oils was not sufficient to affect dietary selection through postingestive signals. So, in conclusion, when orosensorial information from food is absent, the fish are able to select between diets at a macronutrient level by using postingestive information.
